EN 10204 3.1 certificates: what to check when the metal arrives
EN 10204 defines the inspection documents a manufacturer issues for metallic products. For critical parts, buyers usually ask for a type 3.1 certificate.
How 2.2, 3.1 and 3.2 differ
- 2.2: test report by the manufacturer, based on non-specific inspection, so not necessarily your batch.
- 3.1: inspection certificate with test results for the actual products supplied, signed by the manufacturer’s authorised inspection representative, independent of production.
- 3.2: the same as 3.1, but also signed by the purchaser’s representative or an independent inspector.
What to check on the certificate
- The grade and standard match the contract.
- The heat number on the certificate matches the marking on the metal.
- The chemical composition is within the limits of the grade.
- Mechanical properties: yield strength, tensile strength, elongation and, where required, impact energy.
- Dimensions, quantity and weight of the batch.
- Delivery condition, such as heat treatment.
- Signature and stamp of the quality department.
State the certificate type in your request and in the contract, so the mill prepares the right document with the shipment.
